Demolition Day 5

With our expanding plans, we are spending saving more money..on the demolition! Yep, it was time for the upstairs bathroom to come out. Our friend Kirill, who has been a superstar helper and hanger outer, came to lend a hand.

On Friday I cleaned out our bathroom, which actually give our tight space constraints already was a task in and of itself. Here are some before shots:

On Saturday, I took the first swing at the pinkbeige tile.… Read the rest

State of the VIB

While we wait for Construction Day 8 – D-day, otherwise known as door install day (promised tomorrow), I thought I would do another post on our living situation here. I already posted about our kitchen set up, which works just as well as day 1, though we are probably getting additional exercise going up and down stairs to the second floor bathroom any time we need water for cooking or washing produce/dishes.… Read the rest

Updated Renovation Plans

So as last week all of the construction has happened in 3 days, but we are still scheduled to finish be the end of this week with phase 1, or structural work + major electric upgrade.

I suppose this is as good a time as any to update everyone on our evolving plans – that’s a nice word, evolving. Also could say expanding, second-floor consuming, ever more expensive plans. After we took down the ceiling in the kitchen and it became clear that we need to fix the mess of second floor joists, and then when we thought about the fact that we are moving all of the plumbing (except for the stack) and vents for first and second floor, due to new framing for the powder bath (all of those pipes are located inside the walls of the powder bath), we said to hell with it.… Read the rest

To Gut or Not to Gut

That’s a trick question, because the answer is yes. We are planning to do a complete gut of the kitchen – because its necessary (and maybe because we want to, a little bit too).

walls: Currently, the drywall on the right hand side of the kitchen (where all of the appliances are) is actually about 7 inches from the actual brick wall – half a foot! in an urban house! so obviously that’s coming down to make room for valuable floorspace.… Read the rest

Glazed

It turned out that my efforts to save some money on reglazing process for the bathtub were mostly futile. Once the bathtub master arrived, he took one look at our scrapped up tub and very definitively said: Nope, not gonna work. Uff. But he did agree to accept a ‘side job’ of finishing scraping the tub and threw a sink reglazing in there as well – for $40. So that’s a savings of $25– not worth the time and health, but lesson learned (again) sometimes it’s just not worth it to DIY.… Read the rest

Shopping List: Aircraft Supplies!

Nope, we aren’t building planes. Though that would be pretty sweet. Just sprucing up the upstairs bath (note the floor tiles, shower tiles, and sink – outdated).

Its almost been a year since we purchased a house and did a quick diy job on the bathtub. It wasn’t the greatest looking tub, but it was a big improvement and worked for the first 11 months, while we decided where on the list of priorities the bathroom is – turns out not very high.… Read the rest
