Subway tile inspiration and choice

Ok, so so far the feedback on the blog/conversations is that we should just go with wainscoting with subway tile and then paint up top. But  I thought I would also do a round up of inspiration pictures to help visualize the two options:

Construction Days 25-26

We have visible progress! More of it! Yay. We already mentioned that heated floors were on the agenda, but here they are all set into the upstairs bathroom floor (also notice the sink hook up, there and waiting):

And our bathroom floor all covered up and ready for more thin set and tiles – a highly exciting prospect that gets us one step closer to functional bath, since as of right now we are still shower-less and sink-less.… Read the rest

Éminence Grise

The other day, I was sitting around, looking at this:

and it just really looked awful. and I thought, to hell with waiting to demolish the kitchen, even though that is exactly what i would like to do right now. unfortunately (or fortunately) we have to wait a few more months before we can begin in order to line up all of our financial sources to begin. we are thinking mid march, but that’s a subject for another post.… Read the rest

Soooo, in reference to earlier rhetorical questions on contractors…this is what happens when you don’t get estimates – you get charged twice the amount that you initially thought you would. On our first meeting with the plumber we pointed out several problems and got an estimate of under $300. well a month later and several other problems (initial list was #1-3 of the list below) fixed we paid twice as much.… Read the rest

wax ring is on!

water damage-ish

Well if we hadn’t noticed those fine water damage bubbles in the ceiling – who knows, maybe one day we would have gone to the bathroom and the toilet would just fall through?! Cause guess what? there was no wax ring.

The good news, its all taken care of now. The bad news – guessing what else hides behind the “renovations” in this house.… Read the rest

When you are a homeowner

you find out about such things as “wax ring” – apparently that is something that needs to be put under the toilet upstairs to stop the water accumulation in our kitchen ceiling. bet you didn’t really want to know that, but neither did I…

on to more appealing thoughts — the plumber came, he is the first contractor/handyman that we have ever hired. Both Sergey and I really like him, he showed up on time, did some things and said that he would be back next week!… Read the rest
