Union Market, Washington DC

I was super excited when I learned about restoration of the Union Market, located conveniently near our house. It opened doors back in September, but we had not had a chance to check it out until last weekend. It’s less than a 20 minute walk for us, which is totally walkable in my book (I also walk 35 min to work there and back everyday, so some tell me that my perceptions are a bit skewed.… Read the rest

Changes in Washington DC

I was already excited about the forthcoming transformation of the Florida Avenue historic Union Market, which is about a 15 minute walk from our house. But this just blows any.previous.expectations.out.of.the.water. This is going to be amazing.

A butcher shop you say? an outdoor dining that stretches over an entire block?! amish goods, french specialties, ethiopian cuisine and a flower market? i am literary dizzy with excitement. this is probably not a healthy reaction.… Read the rest

Baby steps

or a giant leap forward.

I generally stay in bounds of house blogging here, but neighborhood is important. (if you aren’t from DC, below probably will have no meaning for you, so come back monday for house updates!)

today, a whole two events of note occur. (whether these will be baby steps or giant leap forward is hard to predict, but some forward movement/progress is happening).

1) Bloomingdale, and actually the entire ward 5, became a proud host to a bar/tavern.… Read the rest

Pick, pick, picking away

Peeling paint is sort of like blisters, there is an irresistible urge to pick at it. This is what happens when you give in:

I guess one of the previous VIB occupants, at some point in the house’s 100 year history, was into gold. I suppose the current state of pocket door trim will encourage us to take care of these sooner rather than later. I am not quite sure who to call about restoration of pocket doors though.… Read the rest

Nice Turret

Of course it was the house itself – largely the original details – that was the reason behind our purchase, but location was almost as important. When we started looking for a house we had a range of neighborhoods in mind, but Bloomingdale was always at the top of the list. The location was just right, as you can walk downtown and to the mall in under 40 minutes (yay walking to work!);… Read the rest

Yesterday, we stumbled on The Brass knob Backdoor Warehouse. its just a few blocks from our house and it is amazing. incredible. jaw dropping. i don’t think i have anything to add to the pictures really.

we also were extremely lucky to secure a floor rail for our pocket doors – the pair that lead out to the foyer are missing part of their railing (probably butchered it during the carpet installation or some such).… Read the rest

Good Neighbor

Yesterday we helped to set up a watering system for a Scarlet Oak that was planted by the Urban Forestry Association several weeks ago (see more here) a few doors down from us. Our neighbor had actually requested the tree last spring. Hopefully we didn’t mess up too badly (we accidentally made more holes than necessary and then had to patch them up with a lighter).… Read the rest
