The only original door in the house

No Go

Week two at Victorian in Bloom was exciting, mainly because of the prospect of being able to do laundry. We had decided that of all expensive purchases we can make, we would get a washing machine (no dryer yet – hello line dry) as it should last (hopefully) awhile and the look of the machine doesn’t matter very much – unlike for kitchen appliances, which would be a rather silly purchase since we don’t know what we want our kitchen to ultimately look like.

The problem is that our house is over a hundred years old, meaning that all of the door frames – with the exception of the formal living/dining rooms – aren’t very wide at all. Sergey took off one part of the door frame to the basement, discovering in the process what else, but more of the original door frames

This gave us a 27″-wide space – exactly the width of the washing machine. We decided to leave the other side untouched, partly for preserving what is there, partly for fear of what else we may discover, and partly due to laziness.

The delivery men finally showed up yesterday. Alas, it did not fit. In addition to that, we apparently have wrong sort of tubes that need to be adjusted for hook up. Meanwhile, we are getting very very low on supply of clean clothes.
