The Great Flood of 2010

The day we were moving, it was raining – but it didn’t really start coming down hard until we were done unloading. Someone then noted that it was good thing we were done, as water from the rain was approaching the curb for the sidewalk. Next day, our basement flooded from more rain, but we thought that this was due to our own drain being clogged.… Read the rest

Stuff, and more stuff

When we moved it turned out that we had a lot of stuff. Like a lot. Like we loaded a u-haul, a truck, and a VW. And still couldn’t quite do it. So the u-haul made a return trip (at $2-a-mile surcharge, it actually required a decision). And then, somehow, our one bedroom apartment exploded into a three-bedroom, two-story, plus basement, house.… Read the rest

Getting Closer

Second coat of paint on kitchen cabinets; dishes and pantry items put away. Cabinet doors still need cleaning/sanding/priming and painting.

Turns out we don’t have nearly enough storage space.

Looks like our galley kitchen in our old apartment had more shelving than this one. I am not sure how we want our kitchen to look like in the end, so I was thinking of getting shelves from Ikea, which could later go into the basement.… Read the rest

Jenia’s birthday party at a Victorian in bloom: seven photos.

Thanks to everyone who came out to our house! The party went great, and I will post pictures of us getting the house ready,as soon as we get internet up and running. We have now spent a full week with no internet, and some of us are less than happy about it.

We move with the speed of light

No, we have not made a master plan for renovations. But in addition to the self-imposed (and in hindsight perhaps just slightly stressful) deadline for carpet/wall removal, there is a bit of an issue with kitchen:

In general overly gross.

In order to put away the kitchen mess (in time for the party of course!) I decided to a) line the cabinets b) paint them to at least be able to look at them.… Read the rest

Thinking Logically

Day 2 in the house brought drainage problems, as it poured rain for 2 days straight. As a result our basement flooded and Sergey spent a good portion of the day playing digging in the mud, in an attempt to fix the problem.… Read the rest

Moving day – It’s a bit insane to close on a house on Thursday, and move on Saturday. Meaning celebration, packing, and cleaning has to happen in the space of well really just 36- 24 hours. The planning was actually all there, it’s just that the closing didn’t quite work as we expected. We are still deliberating whether we will be posting about our house search process…but here’s a short re-cap of what happened:

We went under contract, and had our closing scheduled for a month – Friday March 5 – from then.… Read the rest
